Conquering Bias and Blind Spots for Effective Leadership

Understanding Bias: A Human Condition

Understanding Bias: A Human Condition

Bias, defined as an unfair prejudice for or against something or someone, can manifest in various forms, including unconscious, confirmation, and affinity biases.

Bias is an inherent part of human nature, a mental shortcut developed over time to put our thoughts into compartments to help us quickly navigate our situation. Bias is natural and it's ok. It's important for us to recognize when we might be inserting bias into our thoughts so we can challenge our traditional thinking.

Navigating Blind spots

Blind spots are the areas in our skills or knowledge where we lack awareness, often due to overfamiliarity or expertise in a particular area. Just as we might drive home on autopilot (guilty!), we can fall into routine patterns in our work, overlooking opportunities for improvement. It's crucial to approach familiar tasks with a fresh perspective, continually asking, "Is there a better way?"

From Unconscious Incompetence to Unconscious Competence

Our journey as leaders takes us through stages of competence, from the blissful experimentation of the "unconscious incompetent" to the skilled "unconscious competent," where the risk of blind spots is highest. Embrace each stage with curiosity, vulnerability, and a willingness to learn from those around you.

Stay curious, stay open, and lead with insight.
